Where is Auschwitz closest airport? Where to land?

The museum at the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz Birkenau in Oświęcim in southern Poland near Krakow is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Poland. Many people come to Poland just to visit the museum. Which airport is closest to the Auschwitz Museum? Which airport is closest?

Airports closest to Auschwitz Birkenau

There are two airports in close proximity to the Auschwitz museum located in small town of Oświęcim. One is smaller and serves mainly low-cost airlines from less popular destinations, while the other is larger and served by more airlines.

The airports in question are Krakow Balice (KRK) and Katowice Pyrzowice (KTW). Katowice Pyrzowice Airport is approximately 63 kilometres from the Auschwitz Museum in Oświęcim. This distance can be covered in about 1 hour driving under ideal conditions without traffic jams.

Krakow Balice Airport, main and only airport of Krakow located just outside the city, is approximately 55 kilometres from the main entrance to the museum and the car park there. Getting to the museum directly from Krakow airport will take about 50 minutes under ideal road conditions on the toll-free and very expensive section of the A4 highway, or about 60 minutes on the 780 road.

The airport closest to the Auschwitz Museum

The airport closest to the museum is therefore Krakow Balice Airport. If you want to get to the museum directly after landing, it is always better to choose the Krakow airport. We can get from the airport by car or use very cheap public transport.

In many cases, we will have no choice but to choose Krakow airport anyway, as this is the airport to which we will find longer flights, including, for example, an intercontinental flight from Chicago airport. In the case of flights from the USA, it may be that we first have to land at one of the Western European airports and then fly to Krakow, or land at Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) and then take a train or plane to Krakow.

It is worth remembering that it is very easy, very cheap and very fast to get from the centre of Krakow to the former concentration camp itself. It is also worth remembering that the Auschwitz Museum can be visited for free and its tour is mostly an open-air excursion during which we are exposed to the prevailing weather conditions outside.
