Public transport in Zakopane. How much is it?

Zakopane is one of the most popular tourist cities in Poland and, alongside Kraków, is becoming a major attraction not only for domestic visitors but also for international tourists from the UK and other countries beyond Europe.. Although the number of residents in Zakopane itself is relatively small, tens of thousands of tourists visit the town every year, and they may find the local public transportation useful. Is there public transportation in Zakopane? Are there buses or trams? How much do public transportation tickets cost in Zakopane? Here is the price list and information.

Is there public transportation in Zakopane? A few years ago, the answer to this question would have been no. The town was served only by private minibuses, which were often criticized by both visitors and locals. For many years, Zakopane had no Bolt, Uber and no municipal public transport. However, this changed in 2016.

Public Transportation in Zakopane

**In 2016, the first municipal buses were introduced in Zakopane.** The first bus line, launched in April 2016, was line 14, which ran from the Train Station Area through Olcza, Harenda, Nowotarska, and back to the Train Station Area. After the summer season, bus line 11 was added, running from Cyrhla to Przewodnika Józefa Krzeptowskiego, followed by line 18, which went from the Train Station Area through Piłsudskiego, Kuźnice, Karłowicza, Nowotarska, and back to the Train Station Area.

In December 2023, additional bus lines were introduced in Zakopane. These included line 19, running from the Train Station Area to Kuźnice, and line 21, running from Cyrhla to Mała Łąka. In 2024, route adjustments were made, and line 23 was added, connecting Kuźnice to the Train Station Area.

Currently, the municipal buses in Zakopane include lines 11, 14, 18, 19, 21, and the shortest of them, line 23. Two of these routes are circular. The Zakopane fleet consists of 11 vehicles, including electric buses. The buses are modern and generally run on time.

How Much Does Public Transportation Cost in Zakopane?

The fare system for buses in Zakopane is quite straightforward. A single-ride ticket for municipal transportation in Zakopane costs 4 PLN, while a reduced fare ticket costs 2 PLN.

There are also hourly tickets valid for all lines, priced at 6 PLN for a standard ticket and 3 PLN for a reduced fare ticket. Given this pricing structure, the 24-hour ticket for all lines is a better option, costing 10 PLN for a standard ticket and 5 PLN for a reduced fare ticket.

For those staying in Zakopane for a longer period, it’s worth considering period tickets. A 3-day ticket costs 20 PLN for a standard fare and 10 PLN for a reduced fare, while a weekly ticket costs 36 PLN for a standard fare and 18 PLN for a reduced fare. A monthly ticket for one line costs 90 PLN for a standard fare and 45 PLN for a reduced fare, and a monthly ticket for all lines costs 100 PLN for a standard fare and 50 PLN for a reduced fare.

For a while, there was a discount offering free public transportation in Zakopane for vehicle registration cardholders, but this has since been discontinued.

Where to Buy Tickets in Zakopane?

Bus tickets in Zakopane can be purchased at five ticket machines, in ticket machines on municipal buses, at several shops, at the tourist information center in the train station building, at the BOK Tesko office, and through mobile apps such as moBILET, SkyCash, and iMKA. Monthly tickets are only available at the BOK Tesko office at ul. Szymony 17a.

Bus Timetables in Zakopane

Due to the small number of buses, the timetables for individual bus lines are not very frequent. Line 11 runs approximately once an hour, line 14 runs approximately once an hour, line 18 runs approximately once an hour, line 19 runs every two hours in the morning with a break around noon and a few afternoon trips, line 21 runs several times a day, and line 23 runs approximately once an hour.
