In many European cities, the best way to get around is by metro. This might be the case when visiting Prague or Budapest. But is it the same in Krakow? The question “Is there a metro in Krakow?” is one that often comes up for those planning a trip to Krakow. Does Krakow have a subway system?
Does Krakow have a tube?
Some articles that you can find on the internet say that Krakow will become the second city in Poland to have a subway system. There is some truth to this because it will happen someday in the future, but that future is very distant. Krakow does not have a metro, and despite political promises, a metro in Krakow will not be built anytime soon.
In theory, the first metro line and metro stations in Krakow have already been planned. Promises suggest that the construction of the metro in Krakow will begin between 2028 and 2029, and the metro itself is expected to be ready in Krakow by 2033, which is 8 years from the publication of this article.
Knowing how significant the delays are in the implementation of many investments in Krakow, such as the construction of the Northern Bypass (Północna Obwodnica Krakowa), it is reasonable to assume that the metro in Krakow will not be completed by 2035 or even 2040, if not later.
The only thing to count on in Krakow is a small section of a tram line that runs underground in the area of main train station. Fortunately, from a tourist’s perspective, a metro in Krakow is not necessary.
A tourist doesn’t need a metro in Krakow
Krakow is one of the frequently visited cities, but compared to other tourist cities in this region of Europe, Krakow is very small. Krakow doesn’t even have a million inhabitants, and the area of the only tourist-attractive part, the Old Town (Stare Miasto) center, is very compact.
A tourist arriving by Uber, Bolt, or a direct train from the airport to the center of Krakow can later get around everywhere on foot. All of Krakow’s main tourist attractions are within walking distance of each other.
Summary: Is there a metro in Krakow?
There is no metro in Krakow. The first plans for building a metro in Krakow date back to the last century. For many years, politicians have promised the construction of a metro in Krakow, and the topic has been hotly debated for the past few years.
Based on experience of living in Krakow for decades, we can say that it will still be a long time before the construction of a metro in Krakow begins. The only city in Poland with a metro line is Warsaw.
