Can you drink tap water in Zakopane? Is it safe?

In times of high prices, it has become popular to seek savings and drink tap water. When traveling to Eastern Europe, the quality of water is not always high, but what about Poland? Many people planning a vacation in Zakopane wonder if it is safe to drink tap water in Zakopae. Is tap water in Zakopane safe? Is it suitable for drinking? What is the quality of tap water in Zakopane?

Can you drink tap water in Zakopane?

Yes, tap water in Zakopane is safe to drink. The water supplied to residents and tourists comes from sources in the Tatra National Park and is of high quality, with relatively low mineralization comparable to spring water sold in Polish stores, though not as rich in minerals as bottled mineral water.

The water from Zakopane’s sources is low in mineralization, meaning it contains a small amount of dissolved minerals. The hardness of this water classifies it as “very soft” (0–5°dH) or “soft” (5–10°dH). Representatives of the city and the municipal waterworks in Zakopane boast that the tap water in Zakopane is the purest tap water in Poland. To support their claim, they cite the opinion of a commercial water filter manufacturer, which in 2023 recognized the quality of tap water in Zakopane.

The quality of tap water in European Union countries is systematically tested. On the official website of Zakopane, the results of both microbiological and chemical tests of the water supplied by the local waterworks are periodically published.

Low Mineralization
It’s worth remembering that low-mineralization water contains fewer minerals (e.g., magnesium, calcium) that are important for the body. If you mainly drink such water, make sure to get enough minerals from other sources, such as your diet. While staying in Zakopane, it’s a good idea to occasionally drink high-quality bottled mineral water.

History of Zakopane’s water supply

The first water supply system in Zakopane was built in 1906 and provided residents with spring water from the Kuźnice area. Today, the city uses additional sources in the Tatra Mountains and within Zakopane itself. These sources include Kuźnice, Jaszczurówka, Mała Łąka, Kotelnica, and Kórnickie, with the latter two being the most mineralized.

Important Note
It’s important to highlight one key fact about water in Zakopane. The quality of water guaranteed by the waterworks is one thing, and the quality of water at the end user is another. If you rent an apartment or stay in a hotel in a very old building with outdated plumbing, this may affect the quality of the water that comes out of your tap. However, most hotels in Zakopane are new buildings, and the quality of water delivery is high.

Can you drink tap water in Zakopane? Is tap water in Zakopane safe to drink?

Yes, tap water in Zakopane is not only safe to drink but is also among the cleanest in Poland. Zakopane tap water, sourced directly from the pristine Tatra Mountains, meets all standards for water quality intended for human consumption and is considered one of the best tap waters in Poland.
