Zakopane is famous for its attractions, such as the funicular to Gubałówka, horse-drawn carriage rides to Morskie Oko, Krupówki Street, and the Pęksowy Brzyzek Cemetery. However, one of the more unusual attractions in this mountain town is the “Zakopane” sign. Many people recognize the glowing “Zakopane” sign from various photos online. But where is it located, and how can you find it from the center of Zakopane? Let us guide you.
The iconic, stylized “Zakopane” sign was installed in the town during one of the previous editions of the International Festival of Mountain Folklore. It quickly became a hit among visitors, and it was decided that the installation would remain in place permanently after the festival ended. In 2021, this popular tourist attraction underwent a major renovation and was reinforced. So, where is it located?
The “Zakopane” sign is situated in Górna Rówień Krupowa Park, near Tadeusz Kościuszko Street, close to the Zakopane City Hall. It’s about a 500-meter walk from Krupówki Street, taking roughly 5-10 minutes depending on your pace.
The sign is positioned so that when you take a photo, the famous Giewont massif appears in the background. While it may not be the most breathtaking attraction in Zakopane, hundreds, if not thousands, of tourists take photos here every day.
Zakopane is known for its unique architectural style, called Zakopane Style, pioneered by Stanisław Witkiewicz. The ‘Zakopane’ sign reflects this aesthetic, with its wooden elements and folk-inspired design, making it a perfect addition to the town’s cultural landscape.
For the best photos, visit early in the morning or just before sunset to avoid crowds and capture the warm light on the mountains in the background. In winter, the snow-covered peaks make for a magical backdrop. The “Zakopane” sign is accessible 24/7. At night, it is illuminated with LED lighting, adding even more charm to this unique spot.
