Can I wear a dress to Auschwitz? Can I wear a skirt?

Visiting Auschwitz is one of the most popular short trips from Krakow. Many people visit Krakow during the summer when temperatures in Poland are high, which raises the question of whether you can visit Auschwitz in a dress. Is it allowed to wear a dress to Auschwitz? Are dresses prohibited in Auschwitz Museum? Can I wear a skirt in Auschwitz? Is there a dress code? Let’s check what the regulations of the Auschwitz Museum in Oświęcim say about this.

Can you wear a dress to Auschwitz?

Visiting Auschwitz involves touring a museum, much of which is located outdoors, exposing visitors to the elements. Summers in Poland can be scorching, with temperatures sometimes reaching 30 or even 35 degrees Celsius. Such high temperatures make it difficult to wear heavy clothing.

So, can you visit Auschwitz in a dress? In the museum’s regulations, under Section 2, “Rules of Order,” the first paragraph clearly states:

Visitors are obliged to dress in a manner befitting a place of this nature.

This means there is no specific list of prohibited clothing. The wording leaves much room for personal interpretation.

It can be assumed that attire “not befitting a place of this nature” would include swimwear, bikinis, or other provocative outfits, but not dresses. On the informational sign placed in the parking lot in front of the museum, there is only a crossed-out pictogram of a sports bra and bikini bottoms. Therefore, such clothing is clearly not allowed.

Otherwise, there is no specific dress code beyond this. However, it’s worth remembering that during the summer, especially around midday and early afternoon, the weather in Poland can be extremely hot.

During the tour, which lasts several hours on a paid guided visit, it’s important to stay safe under the full sun and avoid overheating or heatstroke.

When browsing photos of the museum posted online, it’s clear that visitors are often dressed in summer clothing, including short-sleeved outfits and summer dresses or skirts. It’s worth ensuring that the clothing is not provocative. The final decision on whether we will be allowed entry lies with the museum guards at the security checkpoint, which is strict at the entrance to the museum.
