There are two huge tourist attractions near Krakow in Poland. The first is the museum at the former Auschwitz camp in Oświęcim and the second is the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Many people coming to Krakow visit both of these places and wonder if Wieliczka is in Krakow. Where is Wieliczka? Is Wieliczka in Krakow? Is Wieliczka a city?
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest attractions of its kind in the world. Underground in Wieliczka there are beautiful tourist routes visited by tens of thousands of people every year. Is Wieliczka Krakow or a separate town?
Is Wieliczka in Krakow?
Wieliczka is a city located right on the border of Krakow. It is a separate town from Krakow, but in practice Wieliczka is not far from the centre of Krakow and is very easily accessible via Krakow’s public transport system.
You can get to the miniature town of Wieliczka, whose centre is the Salt Mine, in about 20 minutes from the main railway station located in the centre of Krakow. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the railway station (Wieliczka Rynek Kopalnia) where you get off the train in Wieliczka to the mine itself (Kopalnia Soli Wieliczka). Train to Wieliczka is the best way to get here.
Wieliczka is a separate town
Wieliczka is located just outside the administrative border of the city of Krakow and could just as well be a district of Krakow. The town itself is miniature, with less than 30,000 inhabitants. The completely unattractive Market Square in Wieliczka (Rynek Gówny) is less than 12.5 kilometres (7.7 miles) from the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) in Krakow.
Apart from the salt mine to which millions of tourists are drawn each year, there are virtually no attractions in Wieliczka. Finally, it is worth remembering that while Wieliczka is not located in Krakow, it is directly adjacent to it.
You can get to Wieliczka from the centre of Krakow by train for PLN 7 (EUR 1.65; USD 1.69; GBP 1.39) for a normal ticket, and this is the best, fastest and most convenient way to get from the centre of Krakow to Wieliczka. You can also get to Wieliczka by bus on line 304 for a few zlotys or by Uber and Bolt.
